The ruins of Ani are a must see in the east of Turkey. Right on the Armenian/Turkish border it was home to nearly 100,000 people until the great earthquake of 1319 toppled most of Ani. Ani thrived as a great city on the Silk Road and the ruins give tantalising hints to its past glory. The Church of St Gregory the Illuminator is one of the better preserved buildings here with amazing frescos and relief work. Very few tourists find there way here as it is so far off the beaten track but well worth the effort.
