Drying Kelp

Drying Kelp

One of the industries on King Island is harvesting Kelp, yes the seaweed! It grows prolifically in the waters around the island and the islanders collect it from the waters and hang it to dry before it is processed and then added to things like ice cream, face lotions and creams and pills – it is a natural thickening agent. Very hard work when the kelp is wet it is very heavy, the lengths can be up to 3 metres.
