Inside the Summer Palace was incredible. Ornate and a total show of ostentatious wealth, which was the way the very wealthy lived. Gold leaf on every surface and so much ‘stuff’. Whereas The Hermitage was a museum, The Summer Palace was lived in and used for entertaining.

Looking back at the Summer Palace from near the Bay of Finland. You can see the fountains at the foot of the steps in the far distance and smaller fountains lining the waterway towards the palace.

The following morning we drove out to The Summer Palace. This huge palace was left a burnt and nearly demolished ruin at the end of the Second World War. What has happened since then is nothing sort of miraculus with the whole estate being rebuilt, refurnished and remade. This is the view from the top prominade looking towards the Bay of Finland.

After too little time to really see much of The Hermitage Museum we walked back into The Palace Square. While we were inside the whole square had been transformed by the military into a massive parade ground. This was a full dress rehersal for the May Day celebrations to be held a few days after we left.
